You'll need High School biology, chemistry, math. You need strong math and science skills. Many nursing schools offer remedial math courses and teach step by step for drug calculations.
You need the ability to remember complex terms and words, like generic drug names.
Organizational skills are necessary in both book work and clinicals (direct patient care).
You need "people skills" but also the ability to learn ways to communicate with a wide variety of different people, races, ages, ethinic groups, etc.
You need to be able to follow directions perfectly, and to take criticism in order to avoid making mistakes.
You need to have good health with up to date vaccinations and no communicable diseases. You'll need tested for TB and may need booster shots on old vaccinations.
There's more but these are the most important.
You do NOT need college before entering a nursing program, but it can help. Many programs ARE affiliated with college programs for a BSN.

personally with the rush of students for nursing education i find that even the school lacks something,. or should i say that the school shouldn't even teach that but that it should be on each and every child who would like to be a nurse... it's genuine care andcompassion for the patients.... nursing isn't just a job... it's a mission... when you care for your patients there will be less mistakes, you'd know exactly what to do simply because you care.
in nursing you'd get exposed to diseases... troubling moments... you'd see the most out of life's dramas: birth, recovery and death. to be a nurse also requires great dedication... peace of mind and knowing what to do.... it entails hours of not sleeping because of studying for antomy, PHC, NCM, Pharmacology, just to name a few... nursing is the combination of all fields that has something to do with care for the person..
what i have said are general... all technicalities will be taught in school, or in the hospital when you're in duty... but when you are there never forget to have a heart... patients may be stubborn, clingy and annoying at times but remember that if you are NOT there to be with them in their time of need... who will be
