Meatloaf is the same, lots of songs that tell a story. Anyone else agree and think that it is a awesome form of music

Although not at the top of my list, I enjoy both. I was just reading Rolling Stones top 500 albums and both are in the book for the exact style you suggest. Beetles, Sgt. Pepper is ranked #1 for that reason (among others) as well.

In an opera you have many characters singing out their lines in a sequence of songs that form a story. It is completely different from most pop songs that Pink Floyd or Meatloaf produce, or virtually any music these days. The word 'opera' doesn't necessarily mean it is awesome; it is just a form of music.

If I wrote eight songs that tell the tale about Jack and the Beanstalk, and got Destiny's Child to perform the roles, then you would have an opera. That doesn't mean it is would be any good but it takes much more effort to synchronise singing, choreography and plot.

The only vaguely operatic track that comes to mind amongst Pink Floyd's repetoire is 'the Trial' (from 'The Wall'), when the judge, his mother, his ex-wife and his ex-schoolteacher sing about Pink's failings. However Pink Floyd took much of the musical structure from Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weil, and the lines sung by the witnesses owe much to Savoy Opera.

Prior to the Wall, no, I don't think so. Some were heavily themed and Dark Side of the Moon was the next best example, and Animals, but opera, no.
Umma Gumma, the old double album and half instrumental, couldn't possibly be considered rock opera. Obscurred by Clouds was experimental theme music. Mettle was a mainstream and still Floydian album with no central theme.
Meatloaf, absolutely. Old Pink, nah.

Yes, Pink Floyd does have an awesome form of music. Tell me how Meddle forms a story first, though.

how about Electric Light Orchestra? their music IS actually a combination of rock and opera. However, Pink Floyd are still awesome!

Are you kidding me? PINK FLOYD is forever, in the history of music.
Ive been listening to their songs also play some on guitar for over 25 years now, not to mention their concerts. Total magic!
Meatloaf is great but i'm not a big fan. For some reason, listening to his songs/voice, makes me depress! sorry!
