I'm from Texas and cheerleading does not require splits, it depends on the team, of course it would be better to have the ability to be flexible and to flip or whatnot, but I can't do any of that stuff and I was on the cheerleading squad all through high school and I had never cheered a day before that in my life!! All you need is spirit, pep, a great smile and sharp motions wouldn't hurt! All you need is the drive to try, give it all you got and if it doesn't work out, don't quit. Look at the girls that made it and see what you can work on to improve. Look on cheer websites (varsity.com) before tryouts, they have tips on what you can do and how you can improve, around try-outs time (which is usually in the spring before the next football season) they might have a section on how to improve just for try-outs. Also, ask someone who's already a cheerleader for help. Hope this helped. Toodleloo!

As a current cheer coach for 6-8 grade students, I can tell you that what we look for in a cheerleader goes beyond "doing the splits."

I personally hold a cheer camp in the summer to find those girls that wouldn't normally "try out" for cheerleading. It is a fun camp that allows girls to learn what cheerleading is about. Sometimes, they go away thinking...boy, this is just not for me. Others are motivated to move on.

First and foremost, I stress the time element. It takes a great deal of time to "be" on the squad. From practices to games, you can almost count on 10 hours a week at your grade level. You have to ask yourself, can I devote 10 hours a week to this or will it hurt my grades.

This may sound rough, but I will not allow a girl to try out with less than a 3.0 average. The reason for this, is that I know, from past experience that many girls will drop an average of .4 with this activity. Let's face it, when you go out into the world, your cheerleading will have been fun, but you can't make a living out of it! You have to keep up your grades!

Next, tumbling is always a plus; however I put a great deal of emphasis on crowd presense. Smiles, Tight clean motions, knowledge of cheers and "likeability" are all in your favor.

Lastly, enjoy it....if you don't, you won't project it.

Good Luck!

No you dont have to be experienced to be a cheerleader. You do however have to be able to do a split. Its required now for cheerleaders. Also you might want to practice up on your high kicks, cartwheels, round offs, and back flips because coachs want their cheerleaders to be coordinated and flexible.
