Another program running in the background is probably the culprit. A very common one is your antivirus or firewall. Disable them if needed, but I don't recommend it for a long term solution...just to troubleshoot. Try configuring it to accept your game on trusted list or as an exception. Also, check for scheduled programs that may try to run while you are playing.

well your piece of junk is locking up because your video card is older than my grandmother's underwear - A GeForce 2 ?!?!?! what ? are you wanting to get the "Should be in a freakin Museum Award" ??
Let me guess -- youre probably trying to play some game like F.E.A.R. or HL2 w/ the settings cranked-up like a n00b ??
Man -get a new computer, but most of all get a new video card - for the price of lunch you could buy a card 10 times better than that thing ....seriously
I mean a GeForce 2 ?? 64 mb ??!?!? LOL my sound card has 64 mb !! My video card has more memory than your whole system @!!!!!

Make sure you are not running any programs while playing the game. Also, what's your cache memory?? It sounds to me you are having a memory issue. Also, check your video card, swaped the video card to another computer if you have one and try it out that way.

You may have a video driver that is not up to date. The new games and such that are out now may not work properly on a computer even 2 years old. You may have to upgrade memory to 768mb to have reasonal game play.

well i assume you have tryed this with more then 1 game?
i also assume that you have reinstalled the 'problem program'
check your graphics card, go to 'desktop properties'
click the tab 'Settings' and click the button 'Advanced'
go to troubleshot tab and check that the hardware acceleration is set to full.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

one thing could be that there is too many operations running at the same time. Do Ctrl/alt/del and see what is running and what doesn't need to be going.

It coudl be many things,
Are your Video Drivers updated?
Is your BIOS updated?
Do you have sufficent cooling? (It coudl be over heating)
Try doing all of the updates, then check if you are overheating.
