Scientific studies done on the matter have shown that goldfish have strong associative learning abilities, as well as social learning skills. In addition, their strong visual acuity allows them to distinguish between different humans. It is quite possible that owners will notice the fish react favorably to them (swimming to the front of the glass, swimming rapidly around the tank, and going to the surface mouthing for food) while hiding when other people approach the tank. Over time, goldfish should learn to associate their owners and other humans with food, often "begging" for food whenever their owners approach. Auditory responses from a blind goldfish proved that he recognised one particular family member and a friend by voice, or vibration of sound. The goldfish would swim to the top of the water surface to be petted only. During feeding time the blind fish would wait for the food to fall rather than go to the top to feed among the many fish in the aquarium. This behavior was very remarkable because it showed that he recognised the vocal vibration or sound of two people specifically; out of seven in the house, and wanted affection.

That was on MythBusters this morning! I didn't see the end though, so I can't tell you if it's true or not... But they were training the fish to go through a maze and the fish were remembering the location of the food each day.
But I agree with you. I think they say that so they don't feel so guilty about putting them in a small bowl, saying they won't get bored because after they swim around it once they've already forgotten where they've been.

Have you ever seen the show Myth Busters? They tested that myth on one episode and proved it wrong by training goldfish to swim through rings and go to the other side of the tank for food.

The myth probably also makes people feel better about giving them to small children, who are likely to torture the poor fish.

Not only gold fish have memory, other kinds of fish also have. After training they can do some game like shooting the ball.

they don't have really 3 2d thoughts its a lie i own goldfish and actually clear. in addition they say fish don't have emotions so as that once you filet them alive they could't experience it, No they merely don't have vocal cords as a thanks to't scream out in discomfort and the monster doing it would not ought to experience undesirable about what they have performed.

You are COMPLETELY correct - its just a way for people to relieve their guilt for trapping a creature in such a small space. One of the Mythbusters episodes has already disproven this (on top of which duh, 3 second memory? cmon).
