No outs, runner on third. The batter hits a fly ball to the CF warning track. The CF drops the ball on the track for a two base error (batter makes 2B), runner scores from third. The game incorrectly scores the run as unearned and the batter is incorrectly credited as reaching base via error, thus hurting his BA. THe proper way to score such a play is to credit the batter with a sacrifice fly despite the error, because he did his job. He also should get an RBI. The runner from third is an earned run.

Earned or unearned? Or does it depend on what the next two hitters did?

The at bat is an error charged to the center-fielder (E8) instead of a sacrifice fly since the batter made it on base. The run scored on this play is an earned run (with an RBI) since it is probable that the run would have scored even if the center-fielder caught the ball.

The run would have only been unearned (with no RBI) if there were two outs.

That is a really good question! Since the ball was hit so deep, the infield fly rule does not apply. It is VERY possible the official scorer would have called the missed fly ball an error, in which case the run WOULD be unearned. On the other hand, it is also possible the missed ball could be scored as a double- if the ball wasn't bobbled or otherwise touched. Either way, the batter gets the RBI for the run that scored from third.

it does not depend on what the next 2 batters did. the two runs are unearned because there is no guarantee they would have made it home if the CF caught the ball. Batter would also be unearned because of the error in which he should have been out

Depends on what the next 3 hitters did. If they all struck out then the run would be unearned. If one hit a long fly ball that would have scored the runner anyway, the run would be earned.

It's the official scorer's decision depending on how the balance of the inning played out.

Since the infield fly rule is not in effect because it was a deep fly ball...it needs to be caught or its an error...the one runner scores on that error making it an unearned run... the guy on second got there on that error so if he scores from second if one of his teammates drive him in thats unearned too

You can never assume - what if the center fielder caught the ball and threw the runner out at home!? An error is an error is an error if the official scorer says so!

Good Luck!

I believe runs scored on errors are unearned.

Depends on what the next two hitters eventually did.
