Yes, my MacBook battery drains when sleeping, much faster than my PB G4. Not sure why....

Because it's still using power to keep data loaded in the RAM. Putting the computer into sleep mode is not the same as shutting it down. If you don't want the power to drain, you must shut it down. It's not a big deal, my MacBook Pro cold boots pretty darn fast as it is. I generally put it to sleep if I'm walking away for a few minutes or something, or if I'm simply moving to another room.

The short answer is yes, the battery drains when your Mac is sleeping unplugged. Also, depending upon how old your battery is, your battery might not hold a charge for very long, the older it is. I'm not sure what the average age of a battery is.
