The universe began as a single space-time pulse of minimum duration a fraction of a second after time zero
One thirty-billionth of a second later it was 2cm in diameter, mature and eventually became what we experience to-day.

There are several good theories at this time. However the most prevalent is the "Big Bang" theory where space developed from a single point called a singularity, and is expanding at an ever increasing rate like a loaf of raisin bread. The raisins would be various galaxies or galactic clusters. (Short Story)

everything we know of the universe is thought to have been created in the 'Big Bang' not to be confused with the Rolling Stones new album 'A Bigger Bang'.
Space AND Time itself are thought to have been created with it.
The universe expanded to the size of a grapefruit at billionths of a second since the initial event. The universe expanded exponentially at a seemingly faster-than-light rate during a period called 'Inflation'. This lasted for several thousand years. I could go on, but this is spiraling into a cosmology discussion.

The only theory we have is 'the big bang' which everyone knows. Or you could be a religious priest and think up of how the space first come to be.
If you can give a solid answer to this question with backup, you've got a nobel prize waiting for you.

This is what I think (I'm not being a smart a--)
At first there was nothing. Then a God appeared. He created the swirling gases that would start the Big Bang and let THAT do all the work. Then he sat in a corner and waited for television and football to be invented. Needless to say, he had some major disappointment the first 250 million years.

Something had to fill in the gap when matter first split apart, I would guess. Space was probably first in line. Of course, you would have to define, "first" as opposed to a continuum.
