Judas Priest rocks! But I would not call them the "ultimate" heavy metal band. This is one of those pretty subjective questions, but I'll give my 2 cents.

As far as old-school metal goes, I think of two separate schools, with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin as the respective founders. It is on the former school that I will comment.

Priest was in the Sabbath school of metal. Hard, gritty riffs with dark lyrics and sinister overtones. This style prevailed in metal until the early 80's.

Iron Maiden was another great band from this school. Who can forget Eddie towering above the stage.

I can't fail to mention Alice Cooper, the originator of shock-rock. I find it funny that Sabbath was a significant influence in Alice's work, but Alice had significant influence on Ozzy's post-Sabbath style.

There are so many metal bands, both great and small that have been influenced by Sabbath, Priest, Maiden and Cooper. I can not possibly list them all here.

However, my favorite of the four has to be the Ozzy "The Prince of Darkness", "The Godfather of Metal" Osbourne in both his Sabbath and solo careers.

EDIT: BTW, I find it hilarious that the "chains and black leather" look that is so predominant among metal bands and fans was started by Ron Halford with his frequent visits to S&M shops.

They sit behind Black Sabbath in my book, but they are one of the best.

Glenn Tipton was the other guitarist...

the ultimate would be Black Sabbath because they started it and after that every band just played it faster or differently
