Then why do we still have the stupid apes? Wouldn't the stupid apes die out and the smart apes who used tools and fire still be around?

I really do not know where to start here. First; evolution is not linear; think of a bush or a tree, with the various species the ends of twigs. Second; evolution has no direction; you are speaking of evolution as if it were progressive, with intelligence being something to strive for instead of an adaption to environmental conditions. Third; we did not evolve from apes, as we both evolved from a common ancestor and took different evolutionary paths to where we are today. Forth; The " stupid " apes did not die out, because they are adapted to their environment, just as we are adapted to ours. Lose your overall inclusive fitness, the ability to reproduce/replicate and you lose out to better adapted organisms, even if those organisms speciated from the unsuccessful type.

PS To be perfectly technical, whether you like it or not, you are an ape.

Humans, apes, and monkeys EVOLVED from a common ancestor millions of years ago. Apes and monkeys eventually evolved into another branch of primates. Humans have their own evolutionary tree. Gosh, that would be fascinating if apes actually used fire. Modern chimps actually utilize branches and twigs as tools to catch termites. Apes are not stupid.

Good point. That would explain all the stupid dogs that don't use tools. And cats, and mice, and elephants. Oh wait, something tells me that intelligence isn't the only factor in the survival of the species.

Well, the apes are the ones who evoluted. Humans are the ones who evolved.

Intelligence isn't all its cracked up to be. In human society the most intelligent gifted individuals are generally very unhappy and poor. It is somewhat simpler people who do best.

Because Humans are part of a seperate branch of primates, those apes are most evolved in their branch and we're most evolved in ours.

Ow. My brain hurts. This kinda goes into the religious subject... when man was made (religiously) then I think we haven't eveolved from anything.

But in the scientific theory, maybe some just evolve faster...? I don't know that one well.

Sibling rivalry is the simple answer I could offer. One succeed and the other fail to achieved the competition in hand but survived.

I think your question proves that there are various gradations of evolution's manifestations (ie. not everyone ISN'T an ape)

I'd tell you, but I don't think you've evoluted far enough yet.

And here I resoluted to stop being a smart ***. Oh well, there's always 2008.
