9x^2 - (23)(9)x + 1188 = 0
You can factor out the 9 and make it easier to factor.
You know 9 goes into 1188 because if you add the digits of 1188 you get 18, which is divisible by 9, so the original number is divisible by 9. For more info see
http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol3/divisibility.html
x^2 - 23x + 132=0
(x-12)(x-11)=0
Then, by the zero factor property,
x-12 = 0 or x - 11 = 0
x = 12 or x = 11
Suppose you hadn't been able to factor out the lead coefficient. Many people have trouble factoring trinomials like this, and most books just say, trial and error. But there's a trick for that in my blog, scroll down to the entry for Dec 22.

9x^2 - 207x + 1188 = 0
each number can be divided by 9 so now it becomes
x^2 - 23x + 132 = 0
factoring gives
(x - 11) (x - 12) =0
the solution is then
x = 11,12
hopes this helps
