I was at Ikea and found a ring and did the right thing and turned it in along with my name and number in case it was not claimed. They told me that their policy was to keep it for 3 months. SO I went back after 3 months to claim it and now they tell me their policy is to keep valuable items for 6 months then dispose of it by giving it to a charity of their choice. Do I have any rights of posession as I am the finder or does Ikea have the right to dispose of found items without involvement?

I would have thought that you would have a right to it after 3 months. Maybe tell them that you would like to hand it in to the police station. I know that anything not claimed from the police within 3 months is returned to the finder.

The correct thing to do is turn over to the cops and after 45-60 days it would be yours. Ikea has someone in the store that wants that ring, call a laywer and ask. Most do not charge for questions on a 1 time basis. Ikea has about much right to that ring as you did if you stole it off of an old lady. Call for a boycott with all of your friends and make this crap store of furniture do the right thing.

Found items are kept for 90 days, giving the rightful owner time to claim them.
After 90 days if not claimed its YOURS!!
Some one there wants the ring.
No authority does what they told you. Someones pulling one on you. That ring is yours, if it was not claimed.
Go back and demand to talk to the highest ranking person there.
If this isn't a police department, take a cop with you.

If you had taken it to a police station then it would have been yours if it wasn't collected after a certain amount of time - if you handed it into IKEA, then I wouldnt ever expect to see it again as they will probably just help themselves.

I don't see a big deal in letting you have the ring if it isn't claimed in a reasonable period of time.

not if it was found on private property.

next time put it in a lost and found classified ad.
I would ask to see the ring and send someone in to claim it.

lol

the ring is going to charity -- be happy that you contributed in a meaningful way, and move on.

No, you turned it over to a third party.

You did the right thing, though.
