Bob, Celia, Sam and Daniel contributed money to buy their boss a retirement gift. Sam and Daniel each gave the same amount of money. Celia gave 12$ more than Daniel. Bob gave half as much as Celia gave. If the four workers gave a total of $81, how much did Sam give?

This is how I did the problem:

2x + x+12 + (x+12)/2 = 81
3x + 12 + x/2 + 6 = 81
3x + 18 + x/2 = 81
3x + 18 + x = 162
4x + 18 = 162
4x = 144
x = 36

36 is not the answer. What did I do wrong?

Where you went wrong is in between the third and fourth lines, where you multiplied both sides by 2. You failed to multiply the term 3x and the constant 18 on the LHS by 2. Your fourth line should read:

6x + 36 + x = 162

From there:

7x = 126
x = 18

The answer is the Sam gave $18.

Daniel gave same = $ 18.00
Celia gave $12 more
than Sam & Daniel = $ 30.00
Bob gave 1/2 of Celia
1/2 of $30.00 = $ 15.00
SUB-TOTAL = $ 63.00

Plus Sam's same as = $ 18.00
Daniel

GRAND TOTAL = $ 81.00

But the real question here is: Was the boss really worth an $81.00 gift?!! (tee hee!)

2x+ (x+12)+(x+12/2)=81
2x+x+12+x/2+6=81
7/2x=63

x=18

x= sam and daniel
y= celia
z=bob

Sam and daniel 18 each= 36
celia= x+12= 30
bob= 30/2= 15

Total answer+ 36+30+15= 81

Answer is 18.
step 1 - OK
step 2 - OK
Step 3 -OK
Step 4 - wrong. Instead of moving X/2's 2 to the other side. You should multiply both sides by 2.
6x+x+36=162. Then you get 18.

B
C
S
D
are the initials of persons representing the amount each gave

S=D
C=D + 12 ==> D= C - 12 ==> S= C - 12
B=C/2

B+C+S+D=81

Start substituting:

(C/2) + C + (C-12) + (C -12) = 81

3.5*C - 24 = 81
3.5*C = 105
C=30

D= C-12= 30-12 = 18
S=D= 18
B= C/2= 15

DONE!

To start setting up the equation - expenses go together on one side & profits on the other. The expenses are: $4500 fixed overhead and $50 for each product made. Profits: $80 for each product made. x stands for the unknown number of products made. 4500 + 50x = 80x And you can continue from there. =) It's nice to see that you aren't just asking for the answer like so many others do!
