Regrouping is a method that is used when vertically subtracting two numbers in which the following situation arises:

As you can see, 3 is less than 5 so subtracting is not really possible to do, straightforwardly. Regrouping is needed. You "borrow" a ten from the 80 ( the 8 actually represents eighty) and you get "70 and 13". Now, you can subtract five from thirteen. The answer is 8. However, in the tens column, we now have only a 7 (seventy). Seven minus seven is zero. The answer it 8. That's regrouping.
