firstly the g class mercedes was designed for off road use. it was first sold in 1979, made for military use and was avaliable with all diff locks as standard.
the never models may be plusher on the inside, but they can completely hack it off road firsly look at this...

this is the 400CDI model, and this guy carried on through this water with no troubles. if you are not pursuaded look at these videos

http://www.clubmbf.com/Contenus/Sorties/Videos/ErReched2006/Er-Reched-2006.wmv
in one of the videos a club member is driving a g55 described on top gear as 'the coolest car in the world' and he takes it in all the same places at everyone else.
i have owned jeeps, i have luckily never owned landrovers, but my g, even though i sold it late last year, was the best vehicle i have owned, its more exclusive than a maserati quattroporte, its as practical as an mpv and is superb off road.
if you are based in europe go for the 400CDI diesel, if america the 500 is your only option, but gas prices are cheaper over there and the diesel quality is poor for such an engine.
the choice is yours, but have good fun off roading anyway

I have to agree with two-legs and junior... buying a luxury vehicle to beat it around in rugged terrain is like painting your house in your favourite Italian leather jacket. It's not made for the job, and you'll regret the damage in the end.
Even if the Mercedes has the power for off-roading, it likely won't have the suspension or the body for it. Buy something that you can safely bang around such as a Jeep or an older Hummer before they went mainstream and lost their offroad strengths. When they first came on the market they were closer to the military hummers than the tin cans they are today.
Good luck... you'll have a blast. Wish I could go with...

The G started life a military vehicle. Off road is what its best at. I have driven a couple over the years and they can go places few others can. The chassis and drive train are all set for serious off road conditions. Its sad that most of those sold in the US will never see any real action. Buy it and drive it like it was meant to be driven!!!!!!
The only true models are a Hummer H1 not H2 or H3 Toyota Land Cruiser and Range Rovers and not one of them is as dependable as the Benz.

If its really the G, they're great. If its the new GL, I don't know. However, my ML320 can go anywhere a stock Jeep can, and with a lot more style. They are also a lot cheaper than the G500. You can get the ML500 with the same engine as the G500 for half the price.

i own a shop, and the basic truth about them,,they were designed for more road driving than off roading,,the suspension system wasn't set up for rough riding,,they tried to keep it a luxury model, and compromised the drive ability of it some,,it does OK,,but it wont go like a jeep,,i been in one of them,,and they don't handle good on rough roads,,and wont go as good as a jeep will ,the hummer will out do it ,any day,,i have seen this,we went camping in the smokies ,and we had to pull a Benz out of a rut so we could get on by it,,the owner was really surprised that my little hummer could do this,,for the money id get a hummer,,they go a lot better,,good luck hope this help,s.

Ha. Why would you buy a $50000+ suv for offroading when it isnt even meant for that? Save yourself some money and get a BETTER suv that is trail rated. BUY A JEEP!! Here are some links: http://www.jeep.com/en/grand_cherokee/index.html

A decent vehicle no doubt, however for true offroading I don't think that such a luxury vehicle is necessary.
