He is just taking a short break...he will be back after a few episodes...I think I read that he was going to be doing a play

He's not really leaving, just taking a break. But he will be back. He's taking a break from CSI to do stage work.

He is only leaving temporarily for now, and actor, Liev Schreiber will take his place until he returns.
William Petersen does want to leave the show, but has agreed to finish out his contract first. It has another 3 years.
