I fed on demand and once my daughter was having a feed around every hour I increased the amount. Your baby will let you know when he/she is hungry so go with the flow. If it gets to the point that you are feeding every hour or so then increase the amount. If the HV is happy with her weight you should be too!

And just for Amy the post advising that solids should be introduced is not foolish. I weaned my daughter at 4 months, on the advice of my Health visitor. All babies are different and mine was extremely hungry. Maybe introducing a small amount of baby rice would get your childs appetite growing.

My son is 4 months old, less than 15lbs and drinks 5-6 ounces of formula every 3 hours. That is approximately 30 ounces within a 16 hour time frame since he sleeps at least 8 hours a night. A general rule of thumb is to multiply your baby's weight by 2.5 ounces of formula per pound of body weight. So your baby’s intake within a 24 hour period should be 37.5 ounces. 2-3 ounces seems fairly low; however you should consult your doctor especially if the baby starts losing any weight. Also reference the article linked below. Hope this helps…

It takes 4 hours for formula to completely digest (breastmilk takes only 3 b/c the proteins are broken down smaller). When the stomach is trying to complete the digestion process in the stomach and new milk is added that means fresh milk and the old milk (that has had time to be broken down properly with stomach acids) are begin pushed into the colon. This can be very upsetting to the digestive system, and also keeps the digestive system working overtime. The stomach needs time in between meals to rest and recoup. Babys new tummys and entire bodies need to be cared for. I would offer my sweet little One a bottle with 5 oz. of formula. What they don't drink, pour out. 4 hours later, warm a fresh bottle with 5 oz. and see how much she takes. If she finishes the 5 oz., be sure and add 1/2 oz. more each time with the next bottle 4 hours later. Begin her bottles at 6 am, 10am, 2pm and 6 pm. with a last nite bottle at 10pm. Then down to bed for the nite. Baby will rest well, sleeping thru the nite. Mama and Papa will enjoy some time together and also be refreshed for a good day tomorrow! :) See what happens. :) God Bless. Have fun with your baby. She will take all she needs.

I started giving my little baby girl 4 oz. of formula every 2 hours at the age of 2 1/2 months old, and she only weights 13 lbs... the doc said that it's normal and she's on the small side, she's now 6 months old

Even during the night???

If the baby is feeding that way through the night I would say yes. But if the baby isnt feeding like that through the night I would say no.

My daughter is 4 months and due to medical conditions has a dietician and she gives me a range of mL she should be eating a day and right now it is 800mL-880. But your baby weighs 2 pounds more than her so I would say it should be given at least 950mL to the most 1100 in 24 hours. 3 ounces for every pound is too much it is actually 2.5 ounces for every pound.

A baby will definently let you know when they are hungry, and I've read that they can't be overfed - guess they will just spit it back up. I have a 4 WEEK old that is eating 4-5 oz every 3-4 hours. He weighed 6lbs 7 oz at birth and today weighs 8lbs 8 oz. Have you talked to your doctor? As long as your baby is gaining weight and seems happy and healthy then I wouldn't worry about it! Good luck.

Ous son's pediatrician(s) said that the general rule of thumb is that they should get 3 oz for every pound that they weigh. So, your son should get about 45 oz of formula a day right now.( that is if he is still formula fed only) our 6 month old son used to eat like that and not until we started solids did he lengthen his time in between bottles. He weighs about 18 pouns and eats two solids a day plus about 20 oz of formula. good Luck

Although all babies are different, I don't think thats nearly enough. When my son was that age(he's almost 6 months now) he was drinking 6 oz every 3-4 hours. If your baby seems full after 2-3 oz, then maybe its enough, but if the baby wants more, give him/her more

No, when my son was 4 months old ( he is now 6 months old) he was drinking 6-7 oz every 4 hours. Maybe thats why the baby wants to eat so frequently ~ he/she is not getting enough at one feeding.

The guidelines (according to my health visitor) is 2.5oz for every pound of your babies weight. Therefore if you baby weighs 10lb, they should be having 25oz a day (minimum).
You should aim to get most of the feed in during the day, so they only wake once (or not at all) during the night.
My baby is 1 month old and I feed her 3-4oz every 3-3.5 hours 7am-10/11pm, then 2oz at 3am.
Methods I use to get my little one to go the full 3+hours inbetween feeds: a dummy, 1oz water.
but, everybaby is different! as long as they are content and lots of wet nappies, there is no problem.
Good Luck
