My 99 buick regal Ls wont start. When it did start I couldn't put it into gear, it was stuck in park, what could be the problem?

Sounds like a bad ignition switch. Besides starting the car, it also sends a signal to the transmission that won't let you take it out of park if the ignition is off.

i mechanic for a living,and the part about not being able to get it out of park could be because it was in a bind or on a hill as far as the not starting part of it,it could be anything,,with today's cars you have to check over everything,including the battery cables and make sure there real good and tight,,other wise id say you may need to get it to repair shop,,like i said,,it can be one of 25 things making it not start,good luck hope this helps.

there is a switch that prevents the car from starting while in gear. I'd bet the switch was damaged when the shifter problem was happening or being repaired.

Did you hold the brake pedal down while shifting out of park ??
