In most states you have to have a law degree and pass the bar.
There are a few states (including California, Virginia and Maine) where you do not have to have a law degree. Instead, you may "read law" as an intern at a legal firm. You still have to pass the bar to practice law -- and the bar in those states is harder than in states where you must have a law degree.

law degree (3 years after college) - hopefully a few classes in family law, but aside from that, most of what you need to know to practice in any area of law is learned on the job

You need to graduate from college, then three years of law school, then pass the bar (test) in the state you choose to live in. Good luck.
