I remember when MTV first came on the air. We didn't have cable, but my best friend did, and we spent hours in front of the tube watching what seemed like the same 14 videos over and over. LOL. One of the early ones I remember liking was this video by Kansas called "Play the Game Tonight." It had these guys playing chess, I think, and it seems like it was on all the time. "Rock the Casbah" by the Clash and "Freeze-Frame" by the J. Geils Band were other great early videos.

Later, I loved "Take On Me" as much for the video as for the song. Some of my other favorites, before I gave up MTV when music and videos became excruciatingly painful to bear, were as follows. I liked videos that told a story much more than those where the band was just standing there singing, sweating and looking pretty. These weren't groundbreaking videos like "Take on Me" or "Thriller," but they entertained me.

Madness - Our House
The Cars - You Might Think
The Kinks - Come Dancing
Julian Lennon - Valotte
The Tubes - She's a Beauty
Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me
Tom Petty - Mary Jane's Last Dance
Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science
Culture Club - Karma Chameleon
Huey Lewis & the News - If This Is It
Donald Fagan - I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World This Will Be)
Pat Benatar - Love is a Battlefield

OMG I can't believe I forgot
Tracey Ullman - They Don't Know
Men at Work - Who Can It Be Now/Dr. Hekyll and Mr. Jive (both great)
The Police - King of Pain (that was the one with all the candles, wasn't it?)
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams Are Made of This
Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart

I'll shut up now.

I'm sure I could add dozens more, but these were off the top of my head. SIGH. Does MTV ever have retro night?

Can you really compare animation to real ppl? I'm not sure what the best video is because u have so much to choose from between Michael Jackson, Prince and even some of the rockers like Twisted Sister.

Thriller is definitely the best in my opinion. Take on Me is up there in the top ten. I also loved Genesis' Land of Confusion video with all the weird rubber masks. Ooh, and "We're Not Gonna Take It" by, uh. . .Twisted Sister, I think? Those are all I can think of right now, but I'm sure there are more.

its been hyped by critics that way because it was so "original" but I disagree, it did not blow me away when I first saw it back then, and I still don't see what all the fawning over it was ever about. It was kinda boring actually. Think about it; Jerry the mouse dancing with Gene Kelly blew people awaywhen animation was FIRST coupled with live action in the 50's. SO..in the 80's (30 YEARS after animation live action had originally been combined), Aha 's video was a just bore.

Take on Me was an awesome video. Definitely top 10. My all time favorite is Sledgehammer, by Peter Gabriel.

Take on me was a great video.
The best Dire Straits video was Brothers in Arms.
That was a very DEEP emotional one. If you have a chance, listen to it with headphones. It was done like Take On Me, with thousands of pencil drawings
Thriller was great too. The Cars "You might think" was cool too.
