betas and goldfish only. and it is not true that they need a filtration system, like the person who left a really long answer said. i mean, it's ok if you do, but betas can definitely manage without. you just dont have to go through the hassle of changing its water every week or so. just make sure you get the water cleaner, and one of the nets to catch it with so you can change the water safely. also, female betas CAN live together, as many as you want. only the males cant be together - they'll kill eachother. nor male and female together.. - the female will kill the male. but feel free to add as many females as you'd like. hope this helps!

Bettas and goldfish need a filter just as much as any other fish. One reason people might think they don't is because they are capable of breathing oxygen at the surface of the water. However, the main purpose of a filter is to keep the water clean, not to provide oxygen.

Bettas in fishstores are kept in tiny cups alone simply because they can't kept together and sell like crazy so they have to be stocked in large numbers. Those unfiltered cups are not intended to be examples of longterm care.

Goldfish started being kept in bowls by nobles in Japan because it looked pretty, and they didn't care that it killed the fish after a short time. You can think of it as the fish equivalent of cutting flowers to put them in a vase.

If people tell you that it's untrue because their fish lived for months or even a whole year or two in their little bowls, it's only because they don't know that bettas can live 5 years, even 10 years, and goldfish can live more than 20.

As for your question, you can probably keep any hardy fish alive for a while in an unfiltered tank provided that you clean the water and gravel manually to keep your fish from poisoning itself with its own waste. You would have to do this daily without fail and you still wouldn't do as good a job as a filter. Your fish will probably be more listless and dull-colored, get sick more easily and more often, and live a much shorter life than if you bought a filter.

They're not that expensive...

Bettas or plain goldfish can live without a filter, but only if they are kept alone. (Bettas will attack eachother, and if there's more than one goldfish in a tank without a filter, it could get dirty quickly.) Goldfish can actually live for up to 15 years if properly cared for, and they can get quite big during that time. Not to mention they're always within everybody's budget, so if yours dies, it's no problem replacing it. =)

The only type of fish that can survive without a filter or heater are bettas.

None. You could keep bettas in a bowl but they wouldn't be very happy and you would have to change the water every 2-3 days.
