Sure it is. I strongly suggest that you ask for a reference IN WRITING so you don't have to keep calling and asking each time you switch jobs, or in case they move on, and you can no longer reach them.

Yes! My former students ask me frequently, and it's been far longer that 2 years. Once you've established a close relationship with a former employer or teacher, it is okay to call upon them for several years. I promise.
