Glass and mercury fever thermometers have a limited range. They also have a constriction that prevents the mercury from falling when they get cooler. That's why you have to shake them down before use. This makes them clumsy to use in a science experiment. You can get a cheap lab thermometer at a place like the one in the link below:

Yes you can use paper/disposable thermometer to measure water temperature. Our company provides them to the food industry to test dish washer temperatures. 160 to 180F is the sanitation temperature range. That type of label is called "non-reversible". The paper thermometer changes color to show the "maximum" temperature reached.

A fever thermometer ( as mentioned in previous posts ) has a narrow range but accurate to +/-0.5F
Typical range is: 84-106°F/29-41°C
They are called 'reversible" and only show the "current" temperature.

You did not state the entire temperature range of your test.

If you want to contact me direct - we might have some samples to send you. I have to watch what I type because I was previously accused of spam.

During the summer it would, but these thermometers have a low range of about 90 to 92 degrees. This is because they are intended for human use 98.6 degrees average. On a hot enough day, however you would be in business.

depends what temperature range you are trying to measure, Fever (medical) thermometers are optimized to measure body temp but would be useless to measure say freezing or boiling temps.

What exactly are you trying to measure?

tape the thermometer to the outside of the beaker. The temp won't be perfect, but it will be close enough.
