Those are the same people that are experts on Japanese economics, Iraqi social hierarchies, and minority crises in London.

These are the people that hang out only with people who have exactly the same views of the world that they do and who do not ever venture outside of their comfort zone. These people therefore assume that the rest of the world must look and feel the same way their small area of influence looks and feels because that is all they ever see.

Must be comforting (and claustrophobic) to never look beyond your own city block.

That is a very good question. Probably because these are the same type of people that can't pronounce the word "nuclear" yet they act like they are experts on public education and create something called "The No Child Left Behind Act."

I don't know where you've been but I have traveled extensively and I can tell you that many people all over the world believe themselves experts on the USA. In addition, many of them are not nearly so polite as Americans and will insist on shoving their opinions down your throat. Outside the USA, people don't believe that discussing politics might be a touchy subject.
