I have a 55 gallon freshwater aquarium. There is this whitish moss stuff that keeps on growing all over it and I don't know how to get rid of it. It's not under much sunlight at all.

There's rarely any cause to dump the whole tank and wash everything! You'll kill your beneficial bacteria colony, which will cause your tank to cycle again, exposing your fish to dangerous ammonia spikes.

Your growth sounds like a fungus. I found a page over at experts.com that sounds like what you have. Check it out:

YOU TAKE EVERYTHING OUT OF THE TANK AND WASH THE TANK AND EVERYTHING THAT WAS INSIDE OF IT.THEN PUT EVERYTHING BACK IN. WASH IT OUT LIKE EVERY WEEK ER SO.
