Fossil fuels are used anywhere and any time that coal, natural gas, or petroleum (including gasoline) is burned as fuel.
Automobiles.
Coal-fired electrical generators.
Steel mills.
Natural gas furnaces in homes.

Pretty much everywhere. Oil, Natural Gas and Coal are all fossil fuels. Anything that uses Oil (or its products), natural gas or coal are consuming fossil fuels. See link if you want to explore more.
