I need to know if my GeForce FX 5500 is better than a GeForce 3 series. I have no idea where a FX series card fits in among their others. I'm guessing that it is better but I need to know for sure before I install a game.

Geforce FX is definetely better. the nvidia family looks like this (from oldest to newest)

Riva TNT
GeForce
GeForce 2
GeForce 3
GeForce 4
GeForce FX (also refered to as GeForce 5, has broken dx9 support)
GeForce 6 (all cards this level and above have shader model 3.0 support and true dx9.0c support)
GeForce 7
GeForce 8 (all cards this level and above will have dx10 support)

there are probably some older ones i missed as well as details on the older cards...but i'm not that old ahah....

GeForce FX 5500 is the better of the two.

GeForce FX 5500 - Mar 2004
GeForce3 - Feb 2001

DirectX 8.x: GeForce 3
DirectX 9.x: GeForce FX

I recommend GeForce FX 5500 or 7200 but the game wont crash unless you have a slow processor or not enough RAMs

5500 is definately better then a GeForce 3. However, they're both extremely old cards, and will more then likely run whatever game you have at low settings if you can even enter the game without it crashing.
