The quote... it means that you shouldn't conform to standards just because people tell you to.
451 degrees is the temperature at which paper bursts into flames.
The government gained control of the people by taking away any controversial or intellectual material (that would be offensive to anyone) and basically brainwashing the society by making all of the TV light and pointless.
Mildred's "seashell" that she listens to all the time contributes to their alienation, as does their different beliefs regarding government and reading.

Ruled paper has lines on it.....His quote means to go "against the grain"....thus, you're not following the rules.
451 is the temp in degrees at which paper burns.
I don't remember...haven't read the book in a few years.
I suppose they were alienated because they couldn't really disagree or discuss much because they were so controlled that they lost opinions. Can you imagine talking when you lack opinions? Pretty boring.....and later probably alienating.

The government gained control of the people by encouraging them to stop reading books and thus educating themselves, then they took it a step further and made books illegal. By not bothering to read this book yourself, you are only proving Ray Bradbury's point, that our society WANTS to be controlled mindless idiots. Do your own homework. Read that book before it becomes illegal. Fight censorship. 451 is the temperature at which book paper catches fire and burns.
