I was given 80 feet of fencing to enclose my garden.I would like the lengthto be 10 feet more than twice the width.what are the dimentions, in feet, for a rectangular garden that will use exactly 80 feet of fencing? (a)If the width of the garden is represented by w.write an expression for the length in terms of w. (b)write an expression for the perimeter of the garden in terms of w. (c) using the expression written in part b, find the dimensions,in feet for the garden.

P = 80ft
(2L + 2w = 80
(L = 10 + 2w

So,
2(10 + 2w) + 2w = 80
20 + 4w + 2w = 80
6w = 80 - 20
6w = 60
w = 60:6
w = 10

L = 10 + 2w
L = 10 + 2(10)
L = 10 + 20
L = 30ft
Solution: lenght is 30ft and width, 10ft.

look at it like this
you know that the fence covers the perimeter and the formula for perimeter is 2(l) + 2(w). The perimeter must equal 80, so 2(l) + 2(w) = 80. You want the length to be 10 + twice the width, or 2(w). So l = 10 + 2(w). Now plug that formula {10 + 2(w)} in the place of "L" in the first formula I listed. Just solve for "w" after that and it should give you the width equals 10, which means the length is 30 (ten more than twice the width) so the lenth is 30 and the width is 10. Use the formula to see if that equals 80- 2 times the length plus 2 times the width should euqual to 80.

You have 80 feet of fencing. The width will be W and the length will be 2W+10 (10 more feet than twice the width)

We can now add all of the sides to get the total fencing length:
We know that 2W+2(2W+10)=80
therefore: 2W+4W+20=80
or 6W+20=80 then 6W=60 or 10.

Let W = Width of the Garden
a) L = 2W + 10

b) Perimeter = 2(L+W) Thus When substituted since L = 2W + 10
Perimeter = 2(2W+10 + W)
or Perimeter = 6W +20

c) since perimeter = 80
80 = 6W +20
60 = 6W
10 = W

Width = 10, Length = 30
10 feet x 30 feet

(a) If width is w, length would be 10 feet more than twice the width, or 2w + 10
(b) Perimeter = 2(w + l)
P = 2(w + (2w + 10))
P = 2(3w + 10)
P = 6w + 20
(c) P = 80
80 = 6w + 20
60 = 6w
10 = w
l = w + 10
l = 10 + 10
l = 20
w = 10

a) L=10+2w
b) 80=2(10+2w)+2w
c)simplifies to 80=20+6w
and therefore w=10
