Every time I press the shift key a symbol appears like this \ and this I (slash and straight line not a letter I)...Please help me to figure this out..thank you in advance...

It could possibly be that you somehow accidentally set your keyboard to a different layout.
Go to your control panel and click "Regional and Language Options"
Go to the Language tab and click "Details..."
There you can make sure that you are set on the regular English - US keyboard layout.
If you have other keyboard software or drivers installed, try reinstalling it if all else fails.

what variety of keyboard is it? workstation? Then probably a hardware concern yet probably keyboard using stress. huge-unfold workstation keyboard? attempt yet yet another one. instant keyboard? Reset the keyboard. Press button to resync with instant receiver. probably instant interference.
