In a recent tourist trip to the US, I've noticed that, although the amount of bi-racial people (presumably white-black mix) are relatively few, there seems to be a healthy amount of bi-racial couples. However, it struck me that in a period of 2 weeks, I only saw one couple that was white male and black female, all the others were black males and white females.
Is this a skewed observation/sample or is it a fair assessment? And if it is correct, what are the reasons that might explain it?

I don't think your statement is skewed....most interracial couples in the US are of white women & black men. These couples definitely outnumber those of black women and white men....that's a fact verified by the US Census Bureau.
However, I disagree with the comment on it being overweight white women & "lowest of the low" black men. I think at one point this seemed to be true, but that has changed.
I live in Phoenix, AZ and the white women out here go after black men left and right and are not shy about it. These are not overweight, lower class women...actually, quite the opposite. I think that is also evident when you look at the number of black male professional athletes that have white women on their arms....again, these are not overweight, trailer trash chicks with lowly, poor black men.
I think its part taboo for blk men & white women and I think other times its genuine affection.
But without a doubt, I believe that there is a historical connection that goes back to slavery that plays in this dynamic for those who are attracted for the reasons of taboo.
And historically, the "interaction" between black women and white men didn't generate that same dynamic. So I think black women come from a different perspective when it comes to dating outside the race and this is just beginning to evolve and change and open them (us) up to other dating options.
You can't put your happiness on hold waiting for an 'ideal'....and love may come wrapped in an unexpected package.
I think this question is way too complex to address in a blurb. :o)

I've actually studied statistics and yes, this would technically be a skewed sample. Seeing as you were touring in one place and only noting the people you saw as you walked around, this isn't a very good observation.
Saying that, I have noticed that there are many black male/white female relationships, and it may be because of psychological reasons, but today, especially in the younger generation (as I'm part of it and see it all the time), relationships are less focused on a person's race and more on who he/she is.
One reason I haven't seen mentioned yet may be popular cultures. It affects so much of our lives and yet we don't really think it does. Notice all of the black rappers and musicians out there nowadays? How many fans they have? Perhaps the people who are most inclined to follow these trends feel that black males are attractive because popular culture says they are. After all, they're "so hot!"

Its a skewed observation. What city or state did you visit? But you may be right. It does seem like there are more black male and white female couples. I don't really know why. But my friend is black and she dates a white guy. Reasons, I don't really know. Maybe most black females feel more comfortable with a black guy. But we can't just assume that. We'd need statistics or some interviews with black females.

No, your observation is accurate. I've lived all over the country, and I'd say that 90% of bi-racial couples are black male/white female. And the answerer above me who commented on the fact that the women are overweight is right on target. I'd also estimate that 70% of the women i these relationships are obese. This is an interesting dynamic, and I think the reason is two-fold: they have low self-esteem, since white boys don't dog fatties, but the brothers will shag anything white, since they perceive it as a conquest, or as a "prop" against the white man. Also, most of these women are basically lower-class, and were promiscuous, and were finally abused or dumped by a white guy, thus it's a once bitten twice shy sort of thing.

Yes I think it comes from the fact that overweight white women with little to no self esteem think they are only worthy of the lowest of the low black men. This is a generalization of what is seen in large American cities. If you get into the suburbs and go up the socioeconomic scale, you find this is not true and that black white relationships have no bearing on color or race, but on love. This is also true in the American Military where the normal prejudices of the American Peoples is almost nonexistent.

It is just one of those pieces of evidence that are quite indicative of something; the something, though, is open for dispute. In the Bay Area, the ratio is more balanced, as per ethnographic data and insurance form return.

The reason is a few.
#1-I never belive STATISTICS!
#2-some areas of the U.S. has diffrent ratios.
#3-For some reason I think white women have more of an attraction to blacks males, than white males has for black women.
Don't get me wrong, black women are HOT...HOT!! THE BEST!

yes, because the relationship between black males and white females were considered taboo. Now women are taking over this country and anything goes.
