My sister in law and I were curious. We heard that only 15% of people in America have PHD's. Does anyone know what percentage of women have PHD's?

Does anyone know if the percentage of PHD holders has gone up from the 15% as well?

What do you mean ONLY 15%? Doesn't that sound a little high to you? Do you really think that one out of every seven people in the US has a PhD?

According to the Census Bureau, there are about 2.352 million people in the US with a PhD. This is about 1.02% of the people in the US who are age 15 or older. About 8% have a graduate degree and just under 24% have a college degree.

About 2/3 of PhDs are male -- which means that only about 0.64% of women have a PhD.
