I know you said price is an issue... and you probably won't like this answer a lot but...
MacBooks are amazing computers. They will last you much, much longer than a PC. they are great for students, and best of all, no viruses. Zero.
http://www.apple.com/macbook/
You can get a good 1 for $1,100.00. If you want to take an even better route, you can pay $200 more and update your Mac by even more. They have the newest, Intel Core 2 Duo Processors, which allows your computer to run at a very fast speed.
While the price may seem very expensive, heres the trick...
You can get student discounts. They are offered to most college students, all homeschooled students, and no highschool students. But they base this on trust, so it is easy to lie about where you go to school or don't go.So by doing this you get a little over $100 off your Mac.
Now, you can simply sign up, or have parents sign up for a Juniper Visa Card. (This is offered on the site.) This allows you to make $25 monthly payments until its paid off.
You get more bang for your buck. Macs have awesome software, they are reliable, and they are long lasting.
My friend has one that is 6 years old! And it still runs pretty smooth. Much better than any 6 year old PC i know of.
I hope this helps you a little but, and atleast gives you some insight on Macs. Before you buy a PC. Please check out Apple's website.
