Unfortunately, I believe not. Just look at the CEO's of the largest corporations in this country. They are still largely white males.
This in addition to the fact that this country is easily manipulated by fear of change. The powers that be will pour enough money, print enough lies, and confuse enough sheeple into thinking the sky is going to fall down on their heads if they vote for a black president. It would be nice to think we could elect a person of color if they were the best candidate for the position, but judging by the last 2 elections we can't even seem to vote for the best candidate regardless of color. You need someone who is not afraid to admit when something isn't working out and search out a better solution quickly and without an ego. In my opinion we haven't had a president with a swagger so much as one in a stupor. Sadly, Barack Obama could be president in a movie but not the real world. Great Question by the way.

I saw a news article with a poll that said 93% of Americans would vote for a black candidate, and another that said 60%. I really hope the 93% poll is more accurate, because 7% of the country being such bigots is a terrible thought, but 40% is just an unbearable, sick number. I hope Americans always elect the best person for the job, and on a personal note I'm really hoping for Obama in '08.

Obama faces a tough road ahead! Or more to the point, he has to build that (New) road! This is brand new territory!

However, he is one of those folk who could make it happen. He is intelligent, well spoken, appears trustworthy and until the media brings out dirty laundry, he has a very good chance! For the moment, he has my interest!

IMHO, black voters will be out in mass numbers, increasing his chance. Conservative voters (of all color) will choose the best qualified, and he just might be it! Actually, anyone with a mind of their own (who doesn't vote for the party) will be looking this guy over from top to bottom! No pun intended!

As for myself ... I am a Sasquatch! Whenever I show up at voting booths - people run in every direction! Even so, I am a registered Republican but I will always vote (if I could) for the best qualified candidate! No matter the party.

Obama deserves watching (in a good way).

Yes, the US would definitely seriously consider a black man for President. I don't know much about Sen. Obama (neither do most people at this point), but Gen. Colin Powell had the Republican nomination locked down in 1996, but decided not to enter the race for personal reasons. I still believe he may have actually won in '96.

I'm a Republican, and I would seriously consider voting for the Democrat Obama if I agreed with the platform on which he ran. He's a highly intelligent, well-informed, well-read person, involved in his community, and a total family man. I appreciate his personal beliefs and ethics. He's a good man with a strong commitment to things I believe in. The question is, does he have the experience RIGHT NOW to be the leader of this country? I don't know.....yet. But my vote would NEVER be predicated upon a candidates skin color.

What will America take... a Black man or a White woman? Well, I vote for Michael Jackson (its the story of his life. LOL!!!)

--------------------------------------------------------
But on a serious note, America has come very far. I being a man of color would love to see Obama as president but I don't see it happening right now. Definitely, after the whole Pres. Bush era. I saw not 2008 but possible 2012. There will either be either a women or man in the President of Vice Pres. position! But in order for this to take place, the US must continue to move forward and not backward.

No black democrat will ever be president while the Clinton's are around as long as Hillary has not attain that prize the Clinton's will sabotage any black candidate they feel will leap over them to get to that position you can take that to the bank.

he doesn't have a chance, Americans don't want drug addicts in office, oh forgot about Clinton ( I smoked pot but never inhaled ), Baracka Obama... cocaine use, Ted Kennedy... excessive alcoholic, George Bush... recovering alcoholic, Hillary Clinton... smoked pot in collage, aw well you you get the Idea, so what was the question? you where trying to place race in the topic as if the color of ones skin makes a difference. I just want leaders who will work together and stop all the BS school yard behavior.

If American voters disqualify a black man just because he is a black man then they aren't really Americans, they're just pretending.

I thought Americans believed in democracy. Now if you dislike his ideas or his party's ideas then that's an entirely different question.

I think the country is far closer to a black president than a woman president. Many would disagree but I think when it comes time to cast the votes, a woman won't cut it. YET
