I have to wonder why people use either service.

The form 1040EZ form is too simple to screw up.

The 1040A is what most people use, and that's pretty simple too, especially if you're got good software.

If you're got a complicated tax return that requires several forms (ie, Schedule C, Form SE, etc et) then I would NOT trust those to a part-time tax preparation service. Depending on your preparation level, you're not looking at much more money to use a reputable CPA.

Neither, I am an accountant and I will tell you that places like those have people who have little to no training. I have 4 years +, and still don't know it all. A good acccountant will not only ask you the questions to help you receive every available tax deduction you deserve, but they will also help you to get prepared for the next year. If slight changes need to be made they are the best to guide you for the upcoming year. So spend a little more, because you save alot more in the long run. I have several clients that can testify to that very problem. Many of them have gone to all of the abovementioned, and if you have any kind of "different" no standard run of the mill, they(H&R, JacksonHewitt & Liberty Finance) do not have a clue as to what they are doing. Taxes & the IRS are not entities that you want to play around with, but these people profess to know what they are doing, and I will defiinitely tell you I have seen 1st hand just what they are capable of doing to innocent, uninformed taxpayers. So please choose a professional, because in the long run you won't have to worry about any past or future tax returns.

Jackson Hewitt is a bottom fisher who looks to exploit the underclass of ignorant people and soak them for every penny they can get. Block is better, but both have gotten on the wrong side of consumer law. It may be a little more expensive, but you will get better service from a local non-chain tax accountant if you don't want to do your taxes yourself.

Turbo Tax online is what I use but if you're going somewhere to have them done, I'd say H&R Block.

I file a 1040 through turbo tax online every year. Highly recommend doing them yourself online...small fees, accurate preparation.
