he was a member of the house of representatives from 1799- to early 1800 before he became john adams' secretary of state, and later the chief justice of the supreme court.

He was appointed chief justice of the United States Supreme Court by the President. But I do not know if Chief Justice is held under legislative branch. He also held the position of Sec of the State.
