My teddy bear hamster usually hangs out upstairs he is about a week old. He feels more secure upstairs (in his cage) so all of the sudden he starts sleeping on the floor and I can see him breathing really hard but I'm not sure if he did that before. What should I do?

He has been hiding his head under all the bedding could that be the cause? He is kinda digging his head into it for dark, I guess?

The bedding is Pine.

It's possibly that you're using a type of bedding that's not good for rodents...cedar is an absolote no-no and I think that some of them have problems with pine too.

But that could be completely unrelated. If you're concerned, then you should take him to a veterinarian.

What is his bedding? Cedar is deadly to caged critters. There is a natural chemical in it that is breathed in and causes a host of problems. Pet shops who sell cedar for caged critters should be sued!

Other wise not to much information here to go on. Know one would have a week old hamster with out the mother....I have had literally thousands of these critters in the years I bred them and can not go much further with the information given....

A week old hamster? That's just about the time they start to open their eyes, but are still more or less blind. If you found him on the floor, it just means that he has fallen out.

Pine bedding is the worst kind you can get for your hamster. The fumes are usually poisonous. Please change it to another one as soon as possible!
