I'd love some impartial advice. Please help me to see beyond these choices.

The situation:
I live and work in Japan. Have only been here for 18 months.
My contract is per year and I must soon decide to stay another year or return to the US.

Should I stay or go?

Pros on staying in Japan:
easy job, good pay (im saving alot and paying off college debt)
i enjoy life here (it's clean and safe)
my boyfriend (he's the best man ive been with)

cons for returning to us:
complete life upheaval (ill have to find a new home, new job, ill be single- long distance relationship is not an option)

Cons on staying in Japan:
this job has no longterm career potential
i feel as though i am delaying the search for a job i truly love
i am close to my family and being away from them is difficult

Pro on returning to US:
ill be able to start a new chapter in my life

thank you.

You have a good life at present and I would stay there if I was in your shoes. Certainly you must be able to do a lot of networking with people who also hire English speakings workers. If your boyfriend is as important to you as you state you have no choice in the matter really. Some jobs there I understand will pay for your transportation to your home country a couple of times a year (I am from Canada and know of some people that have gone overseas to teach ESL and this is an option they have) so if you could find a job with this benefit at least you'd be able to visit your family a couple of times a year. Go with what your instincts tell you and follow them as they will not steer you wrong.

stay another year. Pay down on the debt and enjoy the year. Maybe have your family come for a short visit.
a new chapter will be there next year. You were quick to list the pro's of life in Japan....and only one pro for returning....

You sound like you like it in Japan. I too would stay. Personally my personal life comes before family. Your family should understand. If you are young then you don't want to waste the fun, freedom you have, and all the experiences. But know this, the longer you stay, the more involved you will be with your bf. It will make it super hard when eventually you guys part ways.

From what you say, I would stay - at your age another year won't affect your long term career potential. However, it is also another year in a relationship that from the sounds of it, will end eventually when you Do leave. Are you up for that sooner, or later?

pick, your family or your boyfriend, since your boyfriend probably doesn't like long distant relationships as you said, wouldn't be so great. Why would he not love your for who you are no matter how far away he is from you? well, i would stay another year, i can't wait to visit japan!
