I think Shaq is a waste personally. He's got incredible agility and quickness for a man that size. He's an outstanding athlete. BUT........Shaq has proven himself to be lazy. He is also over-weight. I think that is why his joints are going so bad as of late. Its hell on your joints to run on that kind of surface for years anyway, but when you are 350+ lbs, that is added stress on the knees and ankles. He has a non-existent work ethic. In my own opinion, there is absolutely no excuse for him to have been in the league for 14 years and have virtually no improvement in free throw shooting. In the 02-03 season he had a career high FT% of 62%! And followed that up the next year by shooting 49%. Its not the size of his hands impeding his FT's, it a lack of practice and initiative. Maybe I am thinking about it the wrong way. But in my mind you cannot be an all time great when you are a liability if your in the game late and the score is close becuase you might get fouled. Thats just me. I am not, probably never will be and have never been impressed with Shaq. He had an immeasurable upside because he has unbeleiveable athleticism to be his size. But he was never motivated to get any better..........just bigger. That is what it calculates to for me. He's Big. Nothing more........probably less.
Yao on the other hand is clumsy, slightly uncoordinated, sickeningly soft and for the most part is an athletic joke. BUT Yao has a commendable work ethic. With all the things I just said about him, You can see significant improvements from his rookie year to now. He has great touch on his shot, is a legitemate threat 17-20 ft from the basket, has a nice arsenal of post moves, can block a shot now and then (only averages 2 a game), and occasionally get some rebounds (averages less than 10). My biggest knock on Yao is that he is only averaging 9 rebounds and 2 blocks a game. He's 7'7'' for gods sake. Give me a little more than that. But he's working on it and that all I or anyone else can ask.
I pick Yao based on his shooting touch, shooting range, FT shooting and work ethic. He's no where near the athlete that Shaq is, but he works hard and the skills that he was not given through genes, he can develop with his work ethic. Yao will be a solid player when it is all said and done becuase he will continue to work hard whereas Shaq maxed out his potential roughly five years into his career becuase he either never worked or did not work hard enough. Think about it! The game is close and you want your playmakers in the game to get it done for you. Would you want a big man that you have to pull late in the game beause he will get beat down the floor or get fouled, or a big man that will get down the floor and knock down FT's. 53% for a career vs. 82% for a career. You be the judge.
But that's just what I think.

For sheer physical strength, I'd say Shaq. For basketball ability, I'd say Yao. Shaq can't play outside of five feet. Never has been able to. Remember when the Rockets swept the Magic for their second straight championship? Olajuwon was able to push Shaq out and dominated him. Olajuwon played rings around him.
