Well im a Ford Sr. Master Tech and i will assure you that this engine is picky. Dont let it idle, treat it like a $2 hooker. Itll keep the carbon out of the engine. and Use clean fuel! thats a killer that ive seen. Make shur you replace your fuel filter every 15000 miles and change your oil every 5000 miles or 150 engine hours. And dont chip it! even if your buddy says it wont hurt it. Dont do it.

To give you an idea of how long a diesel engine will last take note of this. When Chrysler decided to contract with Cummins diesels for the Dodge trucks Cummins wanted to put a one million mile warrenty on them. A diesel engine is built to withstand a tremendous amount of heat. As a result, they have a much longer lifespan than the gasoline engine. So long as you keep it properly serviced it should last you a very long, long time. If a well kept gasoline engine will get 250,000 miles you should get twice that from a diesel. They are incredibly tough.

i've been told repeatedly by many people to expect roughly 350,000-400,000 plus. they all say the same thing to MAINTAINCE. an oil change can go for 7,500 miles. i would recommend the first 2 or 3 at the shorter service log you get w/ the truck. i know the oil change is MUCH higher but it's the begging of life, so to get the most you need to give the most. once you break em in though look out.

Without Maintenance? Not long. Without major repairs? I have seen the Navistar engine (they supply Ford) go 400,000 miles without major repairs. (Highway miles) But without maintenance? No way.
