And if you got into a relationship and discovered later that the other person was a big time drinker would you stay or would you leave?

Realize that if someone is an alcoholic, their lover is booze. They will lie to you. You can't trust anything they say. If I found out someone was a big time drinker, I'd leave unless they were willing to go through some type of recovery, whether it's rehab or AA. If you still want to stay in the relationship, you might want to try Alanon, which is for the friends, family and lovers of alcoholic. They won't stop the drinker from drinking but they'll help you deal with it and keep you sane. But don't stay if you don't have a support network. Please.

Well that is my life actualy. I knew he drank but I was so niave as to drinking at the time I didnt know it was a problem. But now if I had a choice I would say no. And I would have left, to spare all they heartaches/drama. But I did stick by him and after 3 years thins started to get better. If some one is doing crazy, or mean things while hammered it is best to have some one else they know and like to witness it besides yourself, cause 90% of the time they wont believe you when you tell them that they did this or this when they were hammered and getting them to see just how crazy/mean they can be drunk is the key.

Only if they had at least 10 years of sobriety and still go to AA meetings.
A dear friend and I were both married to alcoholics, and both relationships were physically and emotionally abusive. Yes, I would leave.
Get out now!

If they refused to quit or refused help to quit, I think I would have to end it. my brother's ex-wife was one of those alcoholics who was really nasty when she was drunk. after one nasty argument they had when she was smashed, my brother punched a wall (he never hit her). she called the police and had him arrested for hitting her...he spent a night in jail and never laid a hand on her. needless to say, after that, it was over. I couldn't go through the same hell my brother did.

Sure I would be in that relationship. if I hated myself I mean, and didn't think I deserved anything more. Then sure why not? I'm not worth anything anyway, right?

No I wouldn't, and if I found out later, he'd have to make a choice. Me or the booze.
