A major is a field of study that you decide to concentrate in. For example, you might get a Bachelor of Science, with a major in Marketing. Or you might get a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in Sociology. You identify an area of study and then your courses are built around satisfying the requirements for that major. (including having some electives, of course.) Typically you don't have to "declare" your major untill sophomore year.

It's the subject area that a person concentrates on in college. For example, I am a marketing major, meaning that I am focusing on marketing. Most of my classes will relate to business and marketing and what I learn will focus on that area of business.
