Note that not all living creatures can feel pain. For example a crab lacks any sort of pain receptors. Fish on the other hand have the same sort of nerves that in humans cause the feeling of pain. Now if they feel "pain", or what not that's complex rather loaded question. As far does anyone care.

Yes most normal human beings do care to some degree. Not caring is general a sign of someone being a sociopath, or having tendencies . Enjoying it is called zoosadism, and it thought to lead to various types of psychopathy. (Serial killers abused animals as children.)

That is not say a normal healthy people can't kill an animal, but that they try to minimize the pain. I grew up on a farm, and we always attempt to be quick and painless as possible. Even when we were fishing.

for the life of me I cannot remeber where I read this, but recently, there was as tudy done on goldfish that disputed the whole 3 second memory thing. It showed that there was a longer span of memory and sensory pain than previously thought.

I'll edit if I can find it. And yes, there are people who care. For example, in certain states, it is illegal to have the ping pong gold fish bowl game at fairs. The law states that it is cruelty for the fish to constantly have a ball splatter the surface of his water. It causes stress and the shock wave can be painful.

Also, there was an art exhibit done where a girl set up a blender with a goldfish in it. The art was supposed to be how many people chose to turn it on, and how many people were appauled. If I remember properly, though several people turned the blender on, most people would not. Her exhibit was banned shortly after for animal cruelty.

There are a lot of states that feel fish are animals that feel pain and suffering and therefore animal cruelty laws apply. Others do not, but it is slowly changing. Govenor Shwartenager, for example, chose to not pass laws against animal cruelty. I, for one, feel that any animal with nerve endings feels pain, and yeah, I care.

If it has nerve endings, it feels pain.. And I care about fish, as should you, and every other human being. If it lives and breathes, people should care. It's wrong not to value life, even the life of a fish. I'm not a vegetarian, nor religious, but I believe that life has value, and pain is pain, no matter what creature we're talking about.

Absolutely, this was proven and accepted as fact by U.K. scientists in the early 2000's. I believe it was 2003. This was established as fact when the scientists injected trout species with bee venom. The specimens exerted extreme displays of discomfort, "Scratching" their mouthes against the walls of their tanks (as the venom was injected to their lips). Other examples of behavior changes included irratic rocking motions. To double check effects of the behavior to be caused by pain, scientists also included acetic acid in the experiement, both substances caused the same response from the subjects.

Also during the course of all this, the scientists were able to identify 58 specific receptors on the head of the fish, 22 which can be confirmed to respond to pressure, and reacted when the temperature was increased in their habitat beyond 40 degrees celcius.

18 Receptors were concluded to respond to chemical alterations and can be classified as polymodal nociceptors. These 18 receptors in particular are what gives us confirmation of the fact the fish are actually "Feeling" the pain opposed to reacting to stimuli in a primitive manner, as these receptors are also present and responsible for pain in upper vertibrates, including human beings.

**Edit** I noticed mention of 3 second memories above my post about goldfish... Believe that fish have short term memories if you will, but nobody can contest the fact a salmon returns to its spawning grounds after being away from it for 4-5 years. It makes the trip out once, and 98% of all adults only make 1 trip back. 2% of wildstock that successfully breeds will return, yet again to the ocean, then once again will return to spawn a second time. Assumingly it would be a far cry from a donkey for a salmon to achieve spawning twice without death, but fact be known, they come and go without need of ANY directions after YEARS of absence...

The popular television show "Myth Busters" on Spike TV also showed the general public that 3 individual goldfish can be trained to swim through a series of hoops, in a specific order to obtain its meal as a reward. They will also perform this every day during feeding, incredibly debunking any myth of 3 second memory spans...

With a;ll due appreciate to the Grand Mastard Baser, whilst fish don't sense soreness like Mammals do, they DO sense some soreness. in case you hooked a individual in the path of the cheekbone, the only element that individual could be waiting to think of approximately is Getting that hook out, and Are you going to kill them. The FISH is questioning a thank you to wreck out, greater suitable than a thank you to get the hook out, however the fish is surely conscious that there is something incorrect.
