Okay, I'm a Leo. I get that. What I don't get is the rest! What the whole fire sign thing, and the stuff about mars and the sun?

Following on from the mothering Cancer sign, we move on to Leo - a sign associated with the father. This is a fixed, fire sign - that suggests it is an energy which stays the same and is passionately emotional. The fixed, fire influence also suggests that this is an energetic, outgoing, stubborn and stable energy. It is an extraverted sign too because of the fire influence. While Cancer is the sign associated with motherhood, Leo is associated with parenthood and children.

In the Leo part of the developmental cycle, we have reached the stage where the ego of the individual has become strong and complete. The needs at this stage are quite basic, being personal recognition. If this need is met then the Leo influence can be positive and admirable with great powers to attract others to them.

Where Cancer is concerned about where we belong, for example with a family, tribe or clan, Leo defines what makes us stand out from our place of belonging and makes us special.

Personal pride in the ability to be creative is the strong theme for Leo, with arrogance being the most common negative attribute. Like Aries, the first Fire sign, Leo is characterized by energetic behaviour, spontaneity, optimism. Leo is much more a stubborn, persistent influence than Aries because of the 'fixed' influence. Where Aries was very much unaware of others, Leo is aware of others from the point of view that it genuinely needs others to recognize, support and follow the excellent leadership and organizing qualities it possesses. Integrity, honesty, reliability are strong with Leo. Where Taurus, the first fixed sign, hangs onto physical, tangible things - Leo holds on to their strong feelings.

The symbol for Leo looks a bit like the lion's mane, and symbolically this king of the beasts with its power, its roar, its regal bearing, is identified with the Leo type.

Physically Leo is associated with the back generally, cardiac trouble, spinal afflictions. Through meeting different Leos over the years highlights and reinforces the lion's rulership over the heart - both physically and emotionally

Leo in Mythology

As I mentioned earlier Leo is a sign that I associate with masculine energy, and the father. It is not surprising then to find out that the father features in some of the myths associated with the lion. We will examine this shortly.

According to Alan Oken, the ancient world abounds in testimony to the sanctity of the feline. Many temples in ancient Egypt were decorated with lions' bristles as tokens of reverence. Leo also had its place in the East where the Lion is an emblem of spiritual power and wisdom in Buddhism.

n Western myth we find the Nemean Lion in Greek and Roman history. This is due to the association of Leo with the first of Hercule's twelve tasks where he was to strangle it with his bare arms in the Lion's own den. Hercules then used the skin as his armour to complete his remaining eleven labours. Both he and the Lion were transported back to the heavens after their lives on Earth were completed.

The lion was also a symbol for the power of Rome. The feeding of the Christians to the lions was a symbolic expression of the might of Rome devouring any enemy of the State.

Liz Green suggests that the symbol for Leo, the lion, represents a fighting animal and suggests healthy, as well as destructive, aggressive impulses. The lion can be tamed and can respond to human care. Symbolically this suggests that people with a strong Leo energy who cannot control their fiery impulses probably won't be able to lead others. Self-control is important, and control of the animal instincts. The tale of man battling beast is an old one and represents the battle between the developing ego and instinct which must be tamed before the person can individuate.

Returning to the father theme, Liz Greene suggests that Leo, like Capricorn, often experiences a disappointment in the personal father, because he seems - and usually actually is - 'wounded', impotent in some way, spiritually 'lame', and cannot offer a sustaining vision of life as a meaningful and enriching experience.

Summary

Summarising Leo is simple when you look at this phase as part of a larger cycle of development. The developmental stage of Cancer is about finding out what we share in common with our family, or place of belonging. Leo follows on from this in then finding out what makes us 'shine' or that makes us special, which brings us to the creative side of this energy.

Some of you may be wondering what having children has got to do with being creative and why children are so often associated with Leo. If you think about the 'creation' of children you will see that no two are exactly alike (except in the case of twins!) and are a product of both the mother and father - a unique creation in each case. Raising these children is also a highly individual exercise that reflects how we nurture our creations.

Our creations - whether they are children, paintings, music or ideas - express something about us that sets us apart from others and that brings us a feeling of being appreciated and admired by others.

The fixed, fire influence gives this sign a consistent feeling nature, in other words, the feelings of these people are often long-lasting and loyal, like a steady flame that doesn't get affected much by the surrounding atmosphere.

the people of this sign are natural leaders and chiefs. In reality the supervising position is what the majority of people born under the sign of Lion aspires to. They are really intelligent and magnetic people. That fact attracts others, but they should not try to dominate everyone. Lion frequently called "The sign of the kings" according to his intelligence and graceful manners. Their astrological symbol " Lion" is considered to be the king of animals.
