The same thing happened at my house two summers ago in the
middle of the night, I heard about it the next day from my
neighbors, I had slept through the whole ordeal. No one awoke
me but the police were chasing some guy through all of our back
yards in a very residential one family homes type of setting. Its
just as well I didn't know about it because I probably would have
gotten in the way or something else would have happened. We
live in the sticks, hills of Ct and usually nothing happens.

Hiding is good !
We mostly just want you to stay out of the way so we don't have to worry about your safety and let us do our jobs.
Its the same as if I were at a grocery store and a jar of pickles fell off the shelf and shattered. You are the manager and you don't want me(general consumer) anywhere around the glass. I could get hurt & you could be sued...
yup...hiding is double good!

If he (assuming it's a "he") stays in the yard, let the cops do their stuff; if he tries to get in the house, he'd better pray the cops get him first!

Be a good witness . . . take note of hair color, height, age and other descriptors and don't contaminate the scene . . . oh and stay indoors if possible . . . you don't want to wind up hurt on accident.
