Usually because religious groups who themselves are susceptible to suggestion think that everyone else will be unduly influenced in a bad way by the dark nature of the book. However what they dont realize is that not everyone is as brainwashed by books as they are (the bible). So they scream and moan until perfectly acceptable works of fiction are banned.... luckily I live in Canada, we didnt ban it... I read Lord of the Flies in school as part of a study on the darker side of human nature and the effects of traumatic events and lack of authority upon juveniles.
PS in response to the poster above who commented that kids who watch Inuyasha do bad things... I am highly offended by that and it makes me positive you have never watched that show at all, in fact compared to other brainless cartoons like Sponge bob, fairly odd parents etc Inuyasha is actually quite good, it has morals, noble purpose, good vs evil theme and is in general quite alot better than any American produced childrens shows. My sister watches Inuyasha and she is in no way "bad" because of it, she is well-behaved, intelligent and well-mannered. I have seen kids that are far less intelligent simply because their parents do nothing but let them watch tv and play video games... its not the shows or games that make kids bad it the lack of parenting that does that.

I did a big 'blink' when I saw that news item. ;-O The better word that could be used was 'spiritually' sick. The Bros are not medical experts and have never claimed to be so. Mental sickness does describe how many in the world today exist as they have given themselves over to shameless immorality, pornography, gambling, pharmaceutical abuse and a raft of other self-destructive activities from a Bible perspective. . Time will tell about the accusation of 'hate crime' as the cited article does not incite anyone to lay a hand on anyone or act to cause fear. It actually says the opposite. . . stay away from disenters and don't mix with them. What more do they want? They reject the Bible, its teachings and those who want to live by its moral code. The article was not directed to the general public and does not 'incite' action other than to stay separate from apostates and d/f ones . . that is what THEY want anyway. Storm in a tea-cup . . time will tell if hard pressed police and courts in UK bother to act on this issue.

“Lord of the Flies” by William Golding was challenged at the Duval County, Florida public school libraries (1992) because of profanity, lurid passages about sex and statements defamatory to minorities, God, women and the disabled. It was challenged, but retained on the ninth-grade accelerated English reading list in Bloomfield, New York (2000).

Many of the passages could also be read from a violently sexual point of view.
Besides, have you heard about what kids who just play GTA or watch InuYasha do? There are some weird people out there. Imagine what could happen if someone like that got their hands on this book. They'd be wanting to hunt animals, throw rocks at people, paint their faces and go off mobbing each other...

The fighting between the children.. Even though it is fiction, and has children, it was not meant for a child audience or meant to be a fairy-tale.. it was to be understood by a bigger, more mature audience..

I assume because it "advocates kids going wild"; some people just can't see that fiction is just fiction and isn't meant as something the author advocates or wants to happen.
