My best friend of 8 years is graduating from law school soon. I want to give her something meaningful, high quality, unique and useful as she embarks on a career in law. I DO NOT want to get a pen, briefcase or a frame. Any suggestions?

Those who feel the need to make rude comments in order to get points, I sincerely hope that you never need a lawyer. This person is one of my closest friends, and, I find it offensive that you are sticking her with the crappy, ambulance chasing lawyers just looking for a case. There is much more to law than what you see on television, and making judgments just on that not only is not helpful, but also unjust.

Thank you to all the people who gave awesome suggestions and advice! I'm really having a hard time picking a best answer because there are a lot of good ones.

As much as the gift, I'd think about the presentation. Splurge for a couple of hours at a spa for the two of you. Take her out to an insane dinner and give her the gift telling her truly "I'm so proud of you. I love you and I'm always here for you." When she needs a support in the future but no time to call anyone she can pull out the locket, Franklin day planner, whatever and reconnect with that day.

If you know her size and taste, a nice blazer or pair of slacks would be a good idea. She's going to need professional clothing once she starts practicing. Perhaps a gift certificate to a shoe store that sells professional dress shoes that are also comfy to wear would be a good idea. A professional-looking day planner may also be helpful.

I wanted a job at the time I graduated from law school. :)

Maybe a book or guide to help her pass the bar in her state? I guess that's not very unique, but...useful and meaningful.

Have some customized stationary made, nice letter head paper with her name, title, and email address or whatever information you might have, or even just notepads made very elegant...something like that from a business card type store that she can use at work.

A Blu-Ray disc of The Devil's Advocate.

Something about as useful as a lawyer.

Engraved business card holder (with her name), a framed photo of her law school (hey, it's not just a frame!), antique scales (like the scales of justice).

A really good reading lamp. She'll need it for all the studying she's going to have to do for the bar exam.
