You should be able to switch to the external monitor without having to see the display on the laptop screen. Look for a key with a blue Fn and another key that looks like a rounded square and/or computer terminal. (This is the display key.)
After connecting the external monitor and starting the laptop, press the Fn + display key. You should be able to get the external display to work.
WindowsXP does have a Remote Assistance (remote control) function, but unless previously set up, you won't be able to do the remote control.

You only need to take her Hard Disk Drive (HDD) out of her laptop. It is actually very simple. Obtain the correct manual for her laptop and it will even show you where and how. Almost ALL laptops have a HDD that is removable from the outside of the laptop. Some make you pop a cover off the laptop above the keyboard, and remove two screws that hold the keyboard on the laptop, then under that is the hard drive. It is intimidating only until you try it. They you will wonder why computer stores charge so much! Hey, it's broken, try it out! Or you can take it to a local Mom n Pop computer store and have them take the HDD out, and put it into your home computer! It will be an extra hard drive!

You have 2 computers and 1 screen. So you want to use them... both at the same time... with 1 screen, 1 mouse, 1 keyboard. Buy this kit to use both computers:
Linksys KVM KIT 2-Port PS2 KB/Video/MS
For the laptop, check if the ports are compatibles.
It is around USD40

Not if you can't allow incoming connections on the pc that you want to control. What you're asking is virtually impossible. You'll probably have to take it in to get it fixed.
