Ice should get chopped up by it (and if the blades are too dull, the ice will melt anyways). I would also add a lemon that you coarsely chop up. The smell will really do wonders for your disposal. There is also a disposal cleaner at the grocery store. It foams up and cleans your disposal but I don't know how eco-friendly it is.
My plumber tells me that the best way to use a disposal is to pretend like you don't have one. If you can hold the object in your hand (like seeds), you are better off throwing them in the trash.

Baking soda is an excellent detergent to clean a garbage disposal. An ice is an excellent sharpener for the disposal blades. But make sure it's small cubes of ice, not big large blocks. I use the ice like you get from fast food places or the bagged ice you get from convenient stores. Also be sure to always use running water when the disposal is on. Happy New Year.

This is my advice for you.
1. Try egg shells or ice cubes
2. Vinegar gets a foul odor out of anything
3. Grind up orange or lemon peels
4. Mix a paste of vinegar and baking soda, drop it down there and drip just a little bit of water so it dissolves just a little to get in between the disposer blades and let sit over night. The next morning, run a slight stream and quickly turn it on.

Just dump a tray or two of ice cubes down the unit and grind them up. No need for anything else unless there is still an odor. Lemon or orange peels will do a good job.

This sounds gross but put some soft scrub with bleach or comet on a scrub brush and go under the rubber opening and swish it around and then pull out the brush and see the gunk that is causing the odors.Yuk!!! Then do the lemon sliced up and it should be good to go!!

use blech to kill bacteria, rinse with water for about 60 secs, then throw a part of a lemon in to get rid of the bleach smell. its always good to run alot of water through the disposal though.

You can feed it ice and clorox. Be sure to flush with plenty of water if the internal parts are stainless.
