The symbols on my laptop have rubbed off, and I cannot read it...My laptop does play DVD movies.

When I place a blank DVD into the driver, is it typical for the cd drive to call it a "cd" and not a dvd? I am trying to learn how to copy movies onto blank DVD disc. My 2 year old is ruining her movies (and mine) by being independant....

You probably have an older DVD player and I'm doubting that it is a burner unless you know for sure. You can find out what model you have exactly by right clicking on "my computer" -->hardware tab-->device manager-->and double clicking on your disk drive to bring up properties. If you don't see "R" or "RW" somewhere in the name of it then it is not a burner.

write down the name of the drive and visit the manufacturer website. They might have a firmware upgrade to allow it to recognize more newer media. Otherwise you can see what your drive is capable of there. You can also use google to search what it is available at, even at retailers..as they give descriptions of what the product is capable of, usually.

best of luck

Assume all formats (since several years - if not a codec=missing)

Yes, It can only determine it is "something" unless DVD/CD is recorded ( the default is called CD with Your specific player version ).

Place blank DVD/CD into slot when writer program asks You.
That saves You error messages and the waiting time while system is trying to read empty DVD or CD.

They are sweet at that age ;-)

You probably have a CD-R/DVD combo drive. Just because you can watch movies does not mean you can write to blank dvd's. Only if you have a DVD-R or DVD-RW drive can you do this.

Your DVD drive may not have the capabilities to write to blank DVD discs.
